Happy New Year! Congratulations on another successful trip around the sun.
Many of us go through the annual ritual of setting goals in each New Year. Of course, we want this to be a useful process. We’re also familiar with the common experience that people “Join the gym” on January First and have stopped going by the time January is over.
I certainly encourage you to set some goals for the new year. But I also want you to be kind to yourself. Perhaps it’s more accurate to set some intentions. Goals are very specific, and should be measurable. Intentions are a lot more amorphous and flexible. These actually work well together. Here’s how.
“Get healthier” is a great intention.
“Lose five pounds by Summer” is a great goal.
Also remember: Twelve months or 366 days (It’s a leap year) are very arbitrary numbers. I can tell you that I have been trying to lose some belly weight for about 3,650 days now. But it’s still worth trying, and it’s still my intention to work on that this year.
A period of time (one month, three months, twelve months) is just one stop along the way to improving your life. So it’s important not to give up just because a milestone passed you by.
Perhaps one additional goal or intention is to be more kind to yourself around goal-setting in 2024. After all, most of us have been working on some things for many years, or even our entire life. Make this a year for recognizing the accomplishments and forgiving the shortfalls. After all, you’re guaranteed to have both of them.
And don’t forget: You’re not limited to one target or one arrow. This is your life. Do what you want!
Have a great year!
